Tablet Disruption for Pharmaceutical QC
Disruption of tablets for QC monitoring of active
ingredients is a time consuming and slow process. This is particularly
when the formulation is slow release - cellulose coated etc. The ability of AFA to focus
large amounts of power into a closed tube in a highly controlled and repeatable manor is therefore ideally suited
to this application.
Benefits of Covaris AFA technology
Very reproducible when compared to conventional sonics
No cross contamination or cleaning
No expensive solvents wash
No compound degradation
Ability to acoustically interrogate sample to determine compound solubility state.
Ability to add liquid handling and weigh station
Automation friendly
Example of cellulose coated slow release tablet, normally requiriring pre-grinding before conventional sonication in order to solublisehusk after 8 min Covaris treatment
Aqueous buffer
24 degrees C
Compound washed out leaving remaining intact husk.
Picture taken after 48 hours husk starting to disintegrate
A number of features and benefits are listed below
| Feature | Benefit |
| Non-contact | No contamination and compliance issues |
| Controllable Mechanical Energy | Accelerates the breakdown of all tablet formulations |
| Isothermal | No degradation issues |
| Closed tube | No contamination concerns |
| Automated on E-210 C2000 | High throughput batch work possible |
