Laser Piercing Introduction
KBiosciences has developed an automated laser plate piercer. The product was predominantly created due to a need for the integrated sealing and singularisation of 2D barcoded 384 tube racks, such as the one shown in the picture from Matrix. The Excision is suitable for sealing and piercing plate densities to 384 wells and suitable for piercing upto 1536 well plates.
The Excision sealer / piercer utilises thermal sealing technology for sealing the plate and a CO2 laser for cutting or scoring the plate post sealing. The instrument can be run in sealing or piercing mode only.
Principle of laser cutting
Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high power laser, by computer, at the material to be cut. The material then either melts, burns, vaporizes away leaving an edge with a high quality surface finish.
Why use a Laser Cutter?
The Excision offers a number of advantages:
- Any plate density can be pierced
- Films can be weakened (scored) for easy access with automated tips
- 384 tube arrays can be sealed and excised
- Plates can be pierced with many pattern types
- No cross contamination and washing required
Excision laser piercer / sealer
The Excision from KBiosciences is a completely automated instrument which can also be controlled remotely via an RS232 command set.
The instrument utilises a 10w CO2 laser that is mounted onto an XY robot allowing the user to program the cutting / scoring pattern required. It is a bench mounted instrument that requires 5bar compressed air and a single 230v power supply. For more info and sample sealed / cut plates please contact us direct.
